According to Energy.gov the average tank water heater will last up to 15 years. Delaying the maintenance for your water heater isn’t ever a good idea, especially if your water heater is getting close to being 15 years old.

At Citrus Plumbing of Venice we’ve created this quick list for signs of what to watch out for with your water heater.

Your Hot Water Is Discolored

If you turn on the hot water and you notice that there’s discoloration of the water, there is a good chance that you’re having a problem with your water heater.

The color can be caused by corrosion from the inside of the tank. Once the inside of the water heater begins to rust, it typically doesn’t take long for the tank to develop a leak. This leak may cause the water tank to burst, resulting in water damage throughout your entire home.

Your Water Heater is Making Odd Noises

Have you noticed that your water heater is making weird popping or knocking noises?  This could likely be from sediment buildup that’s located at the bottom of your water heater.

As a water heater ages, a buildup of calcium and magnesium particles can collect on its bottom. If not maintained, this layer of particles will create a blockage between the water in the tank and the heating elements making it harder for the heater to work properly.

Citrus Plumbing of Venice can save your water heater from certain damage by flushing it out. This will remove all of the sediment that collects that at the bottom of the water tank.

Your Water Heater Is Leaking

If you’ve found that your water heater is leaking, call someone immediately. If there’s a significant enough leak, your water tank could burst at any given time.

If you find a leak, you should immediately turn off the water heater. It would help if you also shut off the water valve that’s feeding water into the tank. After doing this, call a professional.
